My great-grandfather, William Austin Brooks,and his family rented Fairview cottage on Cobbett’s pond the summers of 1900, 1901, 1902 and at least one winter. His brother rented Shady Shore cottage. William’s diaries from that time describe a mostly undeveloped lake. He and his family canoed and rowboated in the summer, and in the winter they snowshoed around the lake. William also led an Appalachian Mountain Club hike to Dinsmore’s Hill. He talks about the Harris farm–perhaps that was your grandfather’s farm? And about Windham Lodge. It sounded like an idyllic place back then. And William’s photos confirm that impression. I suppose both those cottages have been torn down long since. Anna M.
